Review: “Truly Yours” by J. Cole
Written by Aries Franklin
“Truly Yours”, J. Cole’s newly released five track mixtape has taken the internet by storm. His personal message to his fans creates the feeling of a humble rapper pouring his heart into his music, just for the people that admire and support his struggle. “Tonight, I want to give you a few of these songs because you deserve them. It’s hard as fuck for me to keep all this music from you for so long, so I know it’s been hard for you to wait. Thank you for your patience. Vibe out to these songs in their raw form, no polish… just a lot of my soul… “Cole delivers this message, letting his fans know that he’s always thinking about them, always trying to give them something bigger and better, and that he does.
A prequel to his upcoming album “Born Sinner“, Cole gives us a more soulful vibe, beginning Truly Yours with the song Can I Holla At Ya, a heartfelt track over Lauryn Hill’s “To Zion”, instrumental. On each track Cole connects lyrically with people who live and struggle with everyday life. He brings more to the table than just songs about drugs, one night stands, hoes and money. Cole tells a story that a lot of people can relate to, delivering every song with such emotion and power, you can literally almost feel his pain, pleasure or sorrow.
So, is Truly Yours worth taking the time to download? Absolutely! After listening to each track it left me yearning for more, wanting to fall deeper into Cole’s storytelling. Exactly what I feel Cole set out to do, he did. I can’t wait for his new album to drop; this mixtape definitely pushed me to be the first in line to get it! Keep up the good work J.Cole! This is truly an A plus mixtape.
