1. “Thinking About You” by Frank Ocean
I don’t think there was one person who was not singing along loudly while trying to capture Ocean’s one of a kind falsetto when “Thinking About You” came on the radio this year. With all of the production and writing he did in 2012, music was definitely influenced by the mind of Frank Ocean this year!
2. “Try” by Pink
We can always count on Pink to belt out amazing songs with meaningful lyrics. “Try” off of her latest album, The Truth About Love is no exception!
3. “The Transition” by Yonas
Yonas came to change the game with this one. Look out for this NYC artist, he is sure to change the face of Hip Hop and take it to a whole new level.
4. “Ho Hey” by The Lumineers
This folk-rock band had a hit on their hands with “Ho Hey.” The track is a bittersweet, yet catchy tale of love lost. Everyone was clapping and humming along to this song in 2012.
5. “Take My Hand” by Ekko
“Take My Hand” finds Ekko spitting a flawless fast flow over a hypnotic beat. Be sure to check out the video on YouTube for this banger.
6. “National Anthem” by Lana Del Rey
The self-proclaimed gangster Nancy Sinatra sings of being her lover’s national anthem. If the lyrics and production of this one didn’t grab your attention, I’m sure the video which starred Lana as Jackie O and A$AP Rocky as J.F.K. did.
7. “You & I” by Anjulie
With Benny Benassi’s classic EDM production to compliment her, Anjulie’s carefree vocals tell a story of spontaneous love. Turn this one up!
8. “Disparate Youth” by Santigold
Santigold always knows who to captivate an audience with her unique lyrics and intricate melodies. “Disparate Youth” is a relatable song about facing the unknown, but doing so to stand up for what you believe in.
9. “Bad Blood” by Bastille
This British band just wants to let bygones be bygones. Why hold grudges? “All this bad blood here, won’t you let it dry?” Sometimes we meet people who we think will always have our back, and a lot of times they let us down. Sometimes it’s best to move on without bitterness. Who can’t relate to that?
10. “Needed To” by Young H. Skyline
“Needed To” is a high energy track that exemplifies what Hip Hop has been missing ever since State Property stopped making music. Young H. Skyline goes in on this track featured on his latest mixape, Chicken Season.
11. “LIFE” by Jon Bellion
Written and produced solely by Jon, “LIFE” tells the story of a girl who is lost in her partying ways and never really learned how to love. Everyone needs to find themselves.
12. “Running” by Jessie Ware
Jessie takes us back to the days of the divas with this one. “Running” showcases Jessie’s strong vocals and sounds like something you might have heard from Lisa Stansfield in the 90s.
13. “Remember Me” by Daley ft. Jessie J
UK singer/songwriter Daley brings the funk and soul with “Remember Me”, and Jessie J adds a nice touch. This song could fit in anywhere between the early 80s and now.
14. “One Good Thing” by Jared Evan
This track is a perfect blend of Soul and Hip Hop thanks to Jared’s smooth vocals and on point rhymes.
15. “Stache” by Zedd
Sometimes you don’t need any vocals to have a hit. Sometimes you just need a hard kick, sick bassline, and some synths. With “Stache”, Zedd did just that and won.
16. “Bitch Bad” by Lupe Fiasco
Lupe is right on time with this one. “Bitch Bad” does a great job at delivering a great message without sounding preachy or boring.
17. “I’m Alright” by Jake Miller
“I’m Alright” is a positive song about being grateful. Be sure to continue playing this track throughout 2013!
18. “Locked Out of Heaven” by Bruno Mars
Bruno Mars came back strong with this jam. “Locked Out of Heaven” needs to be turned up loud whenever it is played. (Shout out to The Police!)
19. “Skyfall” by Adele
Adele stepped out of the darkness (she just had a baby) to sing “Skyfall”,the latest 007 James Bond theme. This big ballad was a huge success. How could it not be? Do we expect anything less of Adele?
20. “Primadonna” by Marina & The Diamonds
“Primadonna is fun, 80s-esque electro-pop. Marina wants what she wants when she wants it. Everyone deserves to be a Primadonna every now and then.
